INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 31, 2012
  • location   Rancheria Rd, NE of Evans Flat, Greenhorn Mountains, Sequoia National Forest (Kern County, California, US)
  • family Phrymaceae
  • notes   This keys to Mimulus montioides in the JM2 treatment via the following sequence of couplet leads: 1, 2', 5', 10', 11', 15', 18', 23, 24', 25', 27'. There is a 1942 CCH record of M. montioides from near this location.

    M. montioides, as currently circumscribed, is a highly variable taxon that has long been considered by some to contain within it coherent forms that will hopefully soon be more widely recognized and accepted as separate species, due to ongoing work of Naomi Fraga and others. In particular, Naomi F. refers to this plant by resurrecting an earlier name, M. discolor. The plant in this post was near (at?) a location Naomi has listed for M. discolor, where I found it growing with conspicuous patches of Phacelia exilis.
