notes Flowers and involucres of Chorizanthe xanti var. xanti, seen straight on. The Jepson Manual Chorizanthe key is a bit confusing (and apparently in error) when, at couplet 31', it requires ''Perianth lobes not alike, inner narrower and shorter '' to get to C. xanti. The Flora of North America key, at couplet 28, allows for the perianth lobes (tepals) of C. xanti to be either alike (monomorphic) or of two alternating sizes (dimorphic), and the FNA C. xanti description indicates both states occur in that taxon. Indeed, the plant in my post here, and these other posts from Kern Canyon area and the Lockwood Valley area have inner and outer tepals more or less equal; whereas this post from San Gabriel Valley area (LA Co.) has tepals clearly dimorphic...and ones from Comanche Point (Kern Co.) here and here have perianths that are both monomorphic and dimorphic on the same plants!photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
