INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 25, 2012
  • location   Blacktail Canyon. Grand Canyon National Park (Coconino County, Arizona, US)
  • notes   'The Great Unconformity' is a vast geological feature extending across several states in the Southwest. It is the evidence of an ancient land surface created by more than a billion years of erosion. It is particularly well exposed at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. At this outcrop in Blacktail Canyon, the Tapeats Sandstone of Cambrian age rests unconfomably upon the Vishnu Schist, formed about 1.75 billion years ago. The contact between these two units represents a gap of about 1.2 billion years in the geological record of earth history.
