Cottonwood Mountains. Death Valley National Park (Inyo County, California, US)notes This small volcanic crater is one of several located just south of the larger Ubehebe Crater in a field of recently formed volcanic features at the north end of the Cottonwood Mountains. These craters were formed by steam explosions that resulted in the release of huge clouds of ash and detritis without the extrusion of lava. (Sush steam-explosion pits are also known as phreatic craters or maars.) These craters formed during a brief period of volcanic activity several hundred to several thousand years ago. They sit along the plane of a range-front fault that is about five million years old, suggesting that the fault played a role in the volcanism.
