INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 14, 2012
  • location   Death Valley National Park (Inyo County, California, US)
  • notes   There had been speculation over the years about the origin of this unusual erosional feature about six miles south od the Furnace Creek area. Early explanations considered it to be a ventifact - a rock sculpted by wind-blown sand. More recently, the concensus is that the rock had been partially submerged during a period when a lake filled the valley and the stem had been formed by the erosive action of salt crystalization.
