INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 13, 2009
  • location   Lower Black Canyon, White Mountains (Inyo County, California, US)
  • family Loasaceae
  • notes   This single plant was found growing on a talus slope of fairly large-sized rocks. Keys best to Mentzelia oreophila in Jeps93, JM2, and the Intermountain Flora Vol 2B...but the leaf margins, while wavy here, are not dentate per the keys and descriptions in those references (Jeps say leaves +/- wavy-dentate...though the Intermountain Flora describes margins as 'irregularly dentate to subentire'). Because of this leaf margin ambiguity, I considered some of the nearest alternatives, but none of them fit as well as M. oreophila. For instance, M. polita has entire leaves but does not have the clasping upper leaves of the post here, and appears to have a CA distribution localized in the Clark Mountains of the far east Mojave. M. longiloba and M. inyoensis, have longer, thinner, more cylindrical fruit and the former lacks anthers on its petaloid outer stamen filaments, while the latter has thin, scarcely petaloid outer filaments...both characters at odds with the plant here. So I'm presuming this is simply an individual of M. oreophila with entire margins.

Steve Edwards, once stated the epithet oreophila means ''cookie-loving''...but that was in jest :-) Actually oreo is Greek for ''mountain''.
