  • location   Mount Tom. Inyo National Forest. Near Bishop (Inyo County, California, US)
  • notes   Mount Tom (elev. 13,658 ft.) is composed primarily of granitic plutons formed at great depth during Cretaceous time, about 100 million years ago. These magma intrusions have been exposed by uplift and erosion during the last 40 million years. Most of the mountain visible here is Tungsten Hills Quartz Monzonite. The top of the mountain is capped by much older metasedimentary rocks, a remnent of the roof of the magma chamber. This piece of the Pine Creek Roof Pendant is composed of micaeous quartzite formed during Pennsylvanian and Permian time, about 290 million years ago. In the Sierra, most of the older host rocks intruded by the plutons have eroded away but a few dozen patches of these roof pendants remain,
