Plantaginaceae
notes Habit of plant. Stems are fleshy. Leaves haven't filled out yet, though flowers are already bursting forth. I guess this perennial develops ample energy stores kept below ground during winter to allow quick growth when snow melts. As far as current knowledge goes, barely makes it into California, growing at high elevation in the Warner Mountains. It struck me as a kind of botanical platypus, leaves like a saxifrage, flowers like a Veronica, fruits like a Lepidium. (Though Veronica fruits are similar, but more shrunken vertically.) photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
