INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Oct 16, 2001
  • location   Depto. Huiliches, western shoreline of Lago Currhue Grande (Prov. Neuquén, Argentina)
  • family Cricetidae
  • notes   This series of four photographs show numbers of drowned mice that were blown onto the shoreline. Most of the mice in these pictures are 'Colilargos' (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus). These mass drownings occurred on all of the regional lakes at this time (i.e., Southern Hemisphere springtime), and followed the flowering and seeding of the native bamboo (Chusquea culeou) in the preceding growing season (2000-2001) and increase in mice to plague numbers that autumn. See CalPhoto 0000-0000-0711-1203, ...-1259, and ...-1260 for pictures of the Colilargo mouse.
