notes The Spanish common name for this species is 'colilargo', meaning 'long-tailed'. A noteworthy part of the biology of this mouse is that it is the prinicipal host for the Andes strain of a hantavirus. The virus apparently does not cause disease in the mouse, but when humans are infected they develop a serious disease(40-50% fatality)called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The ecological situation is very similar to that of the Sin Nombre virus in the North American deermouse and the associated HPS disease, except that the Andes virus in humans can be transmitted from human to human. The Sin Nombre virus is apparently not contagious between humans. Another interesting feature of the biology of the 'colilargo' is that when the native bamboo flowers and drops massive amounts of seeds in the forests, this granivorous species responds by increasing to plague numbers. Millions of them drown in the large lakes that occur in this region and are washed onto the beaches by the strong winds from the west.
