notes Female. Sometimes these 'four-eyed' frogs will crouch down in the posture shown in this photograph. In this way they accentuate the appearance of the 'large eyes' that are in reality the glandular regions on their back, while at the same time covering their real eyes with their forelegs. Given that in many species of frogs such glands secrete noxious chemicals, it is likely that in this species this also occurs. So, if the predator bites the 'eyes' they will also get a mouthful of a distasteful chemical and let this frog go, and perhaps not attack another animal of the same species because of the memory of the first attack.camera Canon QL/FT & 90 mm Vivitar macro lens
