notes Detail of foliage and flowers (fresh and withered) of the charming Psilostrophe cooperi Individuals of this species had two different overall gestalt types at this vicinity (and time). Those that grew on the open gravelly slopes had duller green herbage (more hairy to protect from intense light, heat, evaporation?) and most of the ray florets of their flower heads had become dry and brittle, while remaining attached to the head. On the other hand, those that grew in moister, more protected niches (i.e shade of steep-sides draws, or large surrounding shrubs) were much deeper green and their flowers were mostly intensely deep-yellow. 'Marescense' is the technical botanical term used to refer to flowers in which the dried petals stay attached indefintely, rather than promptly dropping off. Marescent flowers are characteristic of this genus (and some other genera as well, e.g. Baileya), and are what give rise to the common name 'paper-flower' for species of Psilostrophe. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
