  • notes   Phareodus encaustus eating a Knightia eocaena. These fish lived in a freshwater lake during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago. They are preserved in the Green River Formation, a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone.
