INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Sep 5, 2010
  • location   McConkie Ranch. Dry Fork Canyon. Near Vernal (Uintah County, Utah, US)
  • notes   Petroglyph carved into Navajo Sandstone by Native Americans of the Fremont Culture. This petroglyph is an example of the fully developed Classic Vernal style. The figure is holding a head or a mask, indicated by the 'weeping eye' motif commonly seen in Classic Vernal glyphs. This panel and several others with figures holding heads in a similar manner have caused speculation that the Fremont were headhunters, but archeological evidence to support that idea is scant.
