plant community opening in mixed coniferous forestnotes A figure 8, of unknown origin, in a complicated Bonny Doon violet plant. Bonny Doon violet seedlings grow vertically, producing a trunk-like structure supporting a rosette-like structure with leaves more-or-less densely packed, until soon injured by deer, cottontails, woodrats or machinery. Wiry, stolon-like structures may then result. These thicken where internodes shorten in rosette-like structures, which then may proceed to loosen and thin into a stolon-like structure. Aerial roots are sent down at or between nodes. Well-rooted portions of a plant are likely to produce vertical trunk-like structures, held up by their aerial roots and not otherwise in contact with the ground. Bonny Doon violets that are trodden upon and the orientations of their various shoots frequently changed are likely to be very complicated.camera canon
