INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Sep 7, 2010
  • location   Craters of the Moon National Monument (Butte County, Idaho, US)
  • notes   This vast depression stretches across southern Idaho in an arc about 60 miles wide and nearly 400 miles long. The area has been subject to volcanism for the last 16 million years, resulting in the accumulation of thousands of feet of ash and rhyolite. For the last 2 million years, the area has been torn by rift zones due to stretching of the continental crust. Basalt flows have poured from these rifts, adding fresh new layers of volcanic rocks and creating this flat, stark landscape. The peak on the horizon is Big Southern Butte, a complex of rhyolite domes formed about 300,000 years ago. View is looking southeast from Craters of the Moon National Monument
