  • location   Near a ridge in metamorphic rocky more or less open country on Slate Mountain, elevation about 8,500 feet (Slate Mountain Botanical Area). (Tulare County, California, US)
  • family Apiaceae
  • notes   Photographed near the type locality, where hundreds of plants were seen by Jim Shevock, Jeff Greenhouse and myself on this date. Most were in early fruit (as seen here), aging flowers were visible on one head near a snow bank. The fruiting heads of this remarkable genus break off and become wind-dispersed, supported by the spoke-like hardened sterile pedicels.
