  • location   Bryce Canyon National Park: Near the Hat Shop along Under the Rim Trail (Garfield County, Utah, US)

  • notes   Head end. This snake, about four feet long, was poised with the back half of its body across the trail, the front in Greenleaf Manzanita, the snake characteristically holding its head high. Before I could get closer than viewed in this telephoto image, the snake departed with startling rapidity, probably covering several dozen yards in a couple of seconds. Elevation ca. 7,400 feet. 9:53 am.
