notes Coiled in crevice in creek bed, illuminated by flash. I had walked into the shade of a dry creek bed seeking some rocks to sit on and eat a snack. After pulling off my camera cases and backpack and sitting down, motion caught my eye and I saw this rattlesnake gliding across the rocks on the other side of the pack. By the time I stood up, it was already entering this crevice, formed by river rock. I had to lie flat in front of the opening to get the images. At no time did the snake buzz. The size was difficult to judge since it had already partly entered the lair before I noticed it, but was probably two to two and a half feet long. There having been no other place to hide, I had probably walked right past the snake in full view. Elevation ca. 6,750 feet. 4:40 pm.camera Fujifilm S5000 FinePix digital camera
