INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jan 10, 2010
  • location   Anza-Borrego State Park (San Diego County, California, US)
  • family Apodanthaceae
  • notes   Dehisced fruits of a female of the dioecious endoparasite Pilostyles thurberi, showing the numerous tiny seeds in each capsule. The old flowers are protruding from stems of its host plant, dyeweed (Psorothamnus emoryi). Though recently reassigned to the family Apodantheaceae, P. thurberi was previously placed in the family Rafflesiaceae, the only species of that family native to California. The family Rafflesiaceae includes the southeast Asian species Rafflesia arnoldii, which has the largest known flowers in the world --- 1 meter in diameter --- and thus over 500 times the diameter of the tiny flowers of P. thurberi (which are less than 2mm). For a fascinating and highly informative account of Pilostyles thurberi, with superb exposition, photos, and illustrations, see http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ploct98.htm . Many thanks to the effervescently enthusiastic botanist, Tom Chester, for leading me to this remarkable plant :-)
