  • notes   A collage of detail crops of corollas for what I believe is now considered Nemacladus glanduliferus. It keyed in the old Jepson Manual to N. g. var. glanduliferus (modulo my slight discomfort in discerning infl. 'weakly' vs. 'strongly' zigzag :-). But both the previous varieties were promoted to full species status in Morin(2008): the previous variety N. g. var. g. is now treated simply as species N. glanduliferus; and the previous variety N. g. var. orientalis is now treated as species N. orientalis.

A principal difference between the two taxa is that the corollas of N. glanduliferus are nearly actinomorphic (= regular) while those of N. orientalis are clearly zygomorphic (= irregular w/ 2 lobes 'down' and 3 lobes 'up'...but up & down can get confusing w/ Nemacladus, due to inverted corollas!). I think the corolla lobes of N. orientalis are typically more deeply 'red-tipped' as well...and Nancy Morin mentioned (pers. comm.) that N. orientalis is much more commonly encountered than N. glanduliferus.
