  • notes   This area sits in the middle of the Long Valley Caldera, a volcanically active region around Mammoth Lakes. Ground water heated by a volcanic body beneath the area rises to the surface through a fault-controlled system of fractures in the rock along this stretch of the creek to create these boiling pools.
