notes Careful! Confusable with immature P. monspeliensis. Immature spikelets of P. monspeliensis may show (almost) no lemma awn. And P. maritimus styles may be mistaken for a young (but non-existent) lemma awn. And sometimes P. monspeliensis APPEARS to have tiny ciliate fringes on its tiny glume lobes, but those might be hairs arising below the lobe margin and exceeding it, with a few very tiny hairs arising on the margin. P. maritimus glume lobes are much bigger than in P. monspeliensis, and maritimus bears a proper ciliate fringe. First experience shows that there's no 'sort-of' in maritimus, even with 10 X magnification.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
