location
Agaus Blancas, ~10 miles north of Todos Santos. (Cape Region, Baja California Sur, Mexico)family
Fabaceae
notes Habit shot: showing leaves, fruit, and flower. Growing on the foredune along the Pacific Ocean. I think this is Phaseolus filiformis, but I don't recall (or have notes of) keying it in the field and I don't presently have access to Wiggin's 'Flora of Baja California'. There are four other species listed in Lee Lenz's 'Catalogue of Plants of the Cape Region' (P. acutifolius, P. pedicellatus var. purpusii, P. pyramidalis, and P. rubescens). Postscript: I'm grateful to Debra Valov, who reviewed this photo and informed me that it is indeed P. filiformis. Here are Debra's clarifying comments: 'This is P. filiformis. Its leaves look quite fleshy, but that's not unusual considering it's growing on the beach strand. The relative size of the flower, color and the three leaflets corroborate this. Looking at Wiggins, you can rule out P. speciosus and P. acutifolius, which have entire leaves, not 3 leaflets. I know it's not P. atropurpureus as I've seen and collected this and it's really different with a large, burgundy colored flower.' camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f11, 1/200, ISO 100, using a 50mm Canon compact macro lens.
photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
