INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jan 4, 2008
  • location   Sierra La Laguna, about 10 miles NW of the International Airport at San Jose del Cabo (Cape Region, Baja California Sur, Mexico)
  • family Polemoniaceae
  • notes   I originally keyed this in Wiggins ''Flora of Baja California'' to Loeselia ciliata. However, J. Mark Porter of Claremont Graduate School and RSABG corrected the ID to Loeselia involucrata. His comment:

''This is Loeselia involucrata G. Don. Loeselia involucrata (a blue-flowered species of western Mexico) has historically been confused with Loeselia ciliata L., a yellow-flowered species from Veracruz, Mexico.''

I'm presume this genus is the etymological precursor of Loeseliastrum, the lovely 'calico flower' genus of Alta California.
