INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 18, 2008
  • location   Gardisky Lake, NE of Tioga Pass (Mono County, California, US)
  • family Brassicaceae
  • synonyms Rorippa curvipes var. curvipes
  • notes   Leaves and short stems of Rorippa curvipes var. curvipes. These plants were growing at ~10490' in small slightly depressed openings within patchy plant growth in the transition zone between dryish alpine fell-fields and wetter lakeside meadows. This was a surprising new species for me: before I thought of Rorripa as lush, gangly wet-growing plants---not small, prostrate, dry-tolerant plants. Indeed, after the snow-melt this site must be quite soggy. But over time it becomes drier. So this Rorippa has apparently adapted to an ephemerally wet niche, in contrast to the more continuously wet to marshy niches typical of most members of the genus. [PS: The Jepson Manual states R. curvipes grows below 8000 feet elevation, but the species is included in Stephen Botti's 'Identification Guide for the Alpine Plants of Yosemite National Park', which focuses on flora above timberline...i.e. well above 8000'!]
