  • notes   Oh the dilemma---is it C. umbellatum or C. monospermum? (Many people seem to be unaware of monospermum and call them both umbellatum...so if I'm in error here, at least it will provide some overall balance to the situation :-) So why am I going with C. monospermum? Well, FNA indicates that umbellatum has white petals wheareas monospermum has rose to pinkish to white petals. (See http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=107148. Note FNA has revised the genus to Cistanthe.) But can't umbellatum be white to rose to pink as well? I think many will attest affirmatively. True, yellow anthers cinch it for umbellatum, but that doesn't help here. The distinguishing character most often used is one terminal inflorescence per rosette for umbellatum, two or more axillary inflorscences per rosette for monospermum. But the leaves obscure verifying this character in this image. I'm estimating there are < 16 rosettes, and since there are 16 inflorescences here and some appear to be emanating from the same (hidden) points under the leaves, I'm going with monospermum. Unfortunately, characters like that often don't behave uniformly enough to allow for simple mathematical reasoning of this sort, so who really knows! But even the experts have a hard time with this stuff...check out some of the Calyptridium links the bottom of the page here: http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/consortium/CCH_newdet_byaid.html . OK, so much for my 'truth in determination' disclaimer.
