notes Castilleja arachnoidea, growing in a large dry meadow intermixed with Lupinus breweri (which I'm guessing was the host here, as Castilleja are hemi-parasitic plants). This was a huge area in riotous flower and when I stopped at dusk to take photographs I soon noticed that hundreds of bumblebees were resting on inflorescences all around me. They were fairly lethargic, and it seemed as if they were hunkering down to bivouac for the night. At first, I speculated they might all be males, as I presumed females would return to their nests for the night, but it turned out there were many females present, as evidenced by the thick orange pollen wads on their middle legs. I'd never seen such a thing before, and I'm still unsure as to what the correct explanation is.camera Shot at dusk with a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f29, 1/4, ISO 400, using a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
