  • notes   It is very difficult to separate this from Abies lasiocarpa but in studying other images from the same tree it appears to me to be Picea englemannii as identified on original slide. I used 'Intermountain Flora' vol 1 by Cronquist et all to help.

    1. Reviewed by Timothy D. Ives    Aug 23, 2002

Action: changed name from "Picea engelmannii" to "Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa "

    Reviewer's comments:
"The photo is clear enough, but I downloaded it and enlarged it to take a thorough look. The photo is definitely of a tree in the genus abies, not Picea. Then, looking at a tree distribution map of Colorado where the photo was taken, and the colour and shape of the needles and the purple cones, I come up with Abies lasiocarpa, or Subalpine Fir
    "

    2. Reviewed by Michael Frankis    Jun 22, 2007

Action: changed name from "Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa" to "Picea engelmannii "

    Reviewer's comments:
"Agree with photographer's ident; Picea cones are erect at first, only becoming pendulous toward maturity; shoot, leaf structure and bud scales are also typical Picea."
