plant community Rocky desert wash.notes A delightful desert member of the Four-O'Clock family. The genus name Anulocaulis corresponds to the common name 'ringstem' in Latin ('Anulo' = ring or annulus, and 'caulis' = stem). These names refer to the dark-brown, chevron-shaped rings in the middle of the internodes, formed by a sticky exudate from the stem. (In this image these rings are most easily discerned on the lowest two internodes of the main stem.) I've seen small insects trapped in this exudate. The leaves are also protected from herbivory by a dense covering of coarse trichomes with bulbous resin-filled glands at their bases.camera Shot using a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f8, ISO 100 using a Canon 100mm macro lens.
