INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Nov 5, 2007
  • location   Red Rock Canyon State Park (Kern County, California, US)
  • family Chenopodiaceae
  • notes   Like most shrubby Atriplex, this species is dioecious. Taken late in a dry year, a twig of fruit bracts from a female plant appear here. The fruits consist of two dry bracts laterally fused together and apically fringed with a number of long rounded 'teeth'. The structures usually look like kind of 'a mess' when viewed on the plant. Breaking some off and viewing with a hand lens allows one to see what's going on much better.
  • camera   Shot using a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f16, 1/250, ISO 100 using a Canon 100mm macro lens.
  • photo category: Plant - shrub
