  • location   Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. Moss Beach. (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Actiniidae
  • order Actiniaria
  • class Anthozoa
  • habitat  Low intertidal zone
  • notes   This polyp is a 'scout' or 'warrior' that lives at the edge of a colony of genetically identical individuals. When threatened by a polyp from an adjacent colony, it inflates its acrorhagi, the outer row of specialized white tentacles. The acrorhagi, normally not seen, are defensive stinging cells, that are not used to gather food, only to fend off intrusions by the neighbors. This photo shows a very excited scout in full fighting mode.
