Polemoniaceae
notes Detail of inflorescence. The center flower exhibits 3 freshly unfurled stigma lobes (the other flowers have 3 stigma lobes as well, though they appear to have 2, as the view of one lobe is obstructed due to the projection angle onto the image plane). On the bract jutting out to the left of the front flower, note how the apical lobe (the bract 'tip') is bent downward relative to the plane consisting of the two lateral lobes and the distal end of the bract. This is what the keys refer to as 'bract tips hooked'. Also, note that these flowers are 'protogynous', meaning the stigmas mature before the anthers (see central flower). The stigmas are well exserted by the time the anthers dehisce. This is presumably an adaptation to minimize self-pollination by attempting to separate the individual flower's pollen from its stigma--in both time and space. (That is, if you believe in evolution...and in time and space :-)camera Shot on a Canon D60 at f13, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, using a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
