INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Apr 3, 2007
  • location   Burton Mesa, north of Lompoc. (Santa Barbara County, California, US)
  • family Ranunculaceae
  • notes   These were growing in loose, coarse sand on the mesa top at the fringes of oak leaf litter on the northeast sides of coast live oaks, under the canopies' edges. Much smaller examples were in slightly crusty sand to about 50 cm from edge of leaf litter, with sparse Crassula erecta, Vulpia octoflora and Polycarpon depressum. Scrub area with many trees. Not a wetland. Vernal ponds exist nearby, but the species has not been reported from them. Its occurrence near Lompoc appears to be extremely spotty, with only two collections cited in Smith's 1998 A Flora of the Santa Barbara Region. This occurence is the only one I have found after 250 or more hikes all over Burton Mesa and La Purisima Mission State Historic park, alert for tiny plants in part because I've yet to find the minuscule Ancistrocarphus keilii.

Action: changed name from "Myosurus minimus" to "Plantago elongata "

    Reviewer's comments:
"Hard to definitively tell, but fruiting structure in photo appears more like Plantago, not Myosurus."
