photo location Lompoc
animal's place of origin
San Luis Obispo County. T. atratus from Trout Creek (Lopez drainage) of interior, T. elegans from oil refinery at Nipomo Mesa by the sea. (San Luis Obispo County, California, US)notes These two species are maddeningly hard to distinguish in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Rear upper labials in T. atratus are taller than the 'should' be. T. atratus has an orangy or yellow belly, T. elegans gray (didn't come out in photos.) Behaviorally, try this - offer mystery snake a Sceloporus, and goldfish in water over 4 inches deep (but make sure Sceloporus can escape from the water after it jumps in.) T. atratus will ignore the lizard and eat the fish. T. elegans will eat the lizard. It may get into the water with the fish, but will be clueless at that point, not being an underwater hunter, at least not in my personal experience with captives.photo category: Animal - Reptile
