INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 21, 2006
  • location   Moss Beach (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Polemoniaceae
  • synonyms Linanthus croceus
  • notes   Linanthus croceus (yellow flowers) shown with Clarkia rubicunda (large pink flower). Linanthus croceus flowers typically have a pair of short, linear, red/orange markings at the base of each corolla lobe. These plants are atypical in that the markings are almost the same color as the rest of the corolla, and are thus less visible. This Linanthus species has been renamed Leptosiphon croceus. It is a very rare and endangered species (CNPS List 1B). The distinctive prostrate coastal form of Clarkia rubicunda shown here used to be called Clarkia rubicunda ssp. blasdalei, but was lumped with plain C. rubicunda in the Jepson Manual.
