  • plant community   Sandy openings in maritime chaparral.
  • notes   Fruit and flower of P. penicillata. Note that the hooked bristles are restricted to the tips of the four nutlets, while the proximal margins of the nutlets lack teeth or bristles. The proximal margins also have a relatively thick band of scarious tissue (which looks somewhat like tightly matted white hairs).
  • camera   Shot at f4.5, 1/250 on a Canon Digital Rebel XT w/ a Canon Compact 50mm macro lens.
