plant community Openings in maritime chaparral on sandy subtrate.notes General gestalt of Chorizanthe pungens var. pungens, showing numerous star-like involucres, each with their six thin, white, scarious-margined teeth. Much of the year that's all you see, but if you look closely here, you'll also notice a number of actual flowers exserted the centers of their involucres. In the genus Chorizanthe, each involucre (typically) has a single flower...as opposed to the related genus Eriogonum, which has many flowers per involucre. Presumably this is one reason why Eriogonum species are generally more prolific than Chorizanthes.camera Shot on a Canon D60 at f16, 1/2 sec, ISO 100 with a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
