| Reviewer's comments: | | | "generally treated as a var. of T. variegatum, but the two are quite distinct genetically nor do they hybridize even when growing adjacent to each other. Depending on priority and application, the correct name could be either T. major or T. melananthum, but I think the latter may be the safer bet. The name certainly fits in the case of THIS individual; it has about the backest flowers I've seen on a clover! The name T. variegatum var. major as used in TJM is incorrect since it conflates this species and T. appendiculatum, based on flower size alone. In fact the whole treatment of the variegatum complex (as well as several others) is confusing and inaccurate." |
