  • notes   Identifying this plant poses difficulties for me. The shape of the tepals: widely ovate, with wide bases and somewhat mucronate tips and the color of the anthers (red) leads me to reckon this as F. pinetorum, rather than F. atropurpurea (which typically has thinner elliptic tepals which taper to their bases and yellow anthers). The Jepson Manual states that Fritillaria pinetorum is 'easily confused with F. atropurpurea, which has upper leaves +/- = to lowest cauline leaf'. Indeed, this plant does have upper leaves +/- = to lowest leaves. Moreoever, the distribution map in Jepson for F. pinetorum does not appear to include Mineral King (though it does include the central High Sierra Nevada, a bit to the north of Mineral King). Munz's key and descriptions don't clarify matters for me. Nevertheless, despite these apparent inconsistencies with the Jepson Manual, my best guess is that this is F. pinetorum. Can anyone out there provide decisive info on this matter?
