location
Upper Foresthill Divide (Placer County, California, US)notes The upper basin of the North Fork American is ringed by a series of peaks, formed, principally, by andesitic lahars of the Mio-Pliocene Mehrten Formation. Beneath these 'young volcanics' are various types of much older 'basement' rocks. Here, what appears to be two lava flows filled a valley incised into granitic basement. Subsequent erosion exposed the basement valley and lava flows in cross-section. Elevation, ~8000'.camera Nikon 990
