  • notes   This small shrub has a delightfully unique (but tiny) flower which is a joy to study with a hand lens. The 'parachute-like' corolla is composed of 5 very narrowly-clawed petals whose triangularly-flared blades are connivent along their edges. Each petal blade has a small thin red appendage on top. The apex of each petal blade lies above one of five anthers that are equally-spaced along the flared rim of a central axial stalk emanating from the base of the flower (called the androgynophore).

It is easier to find this plant by looking for its bright red fruit. The fruit is shallowly 5-lobed, scabrous in texture, and more conspicuous than the tiny delicate flowers.

Postscript: More info, discussion, & detailed reference links appear in the notes under this later CalPhotos post.
