  • location   Bonny Doon (Santa Cruz County, California, US)

  • plant community   Growing on nutrient poor sandy substrate.
  • notes   In California, Ponderosa pine is often associated with mid-elevation montane forests, like those on the westside of the Sierra Nevada. The Boony Doon sandhills population of Pinus ponderosa is remarkable in that it occurs only 3.2 air miles from the ocean at the relatively low elevation of 1500'. A few other nearby populations occur in the 'sandhills' habitat around the towns of Felton, Ben Lomond, and Scott's Valley, where some Ponderosas grow within 4 miles of the ocean at around 500' elevation. Various botanists have advocated treating these pines as a separate taxon (P. ponderosa benthamii?). These Ponderosa pines, together with a grove on Pine Ridge in Henry Coe State Park (east of Gilroy, CA) constitute curiously disjunct populations from the nearest more typical populations in the Sierras.
