location
About 200' southwest of ''George's Picnic Area'' along ''Buggy Trail'' in Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. (Santa Cruz County, California, US)family
Liliaceae
plant community Habitat: Cool moist duff under coast redwoods, bigleaf maples.notes Young plant showing initially erect leaves, pedicel and flower bud. Each plant typically has two leaves, though it often seems they have more since they tend to grow in clumps. Apparently a clump of these young erect sheathing leaves makes a tempting meal for deer, who are said to eat the plant. I saw many nearby clumps that were chomped to the ground. As the plant grows, the mottled leaves will become larger and spread outward–eventually lying nearly flat against the ground. Also, the pedicel(s) will lengthen considerably– drooping and twisting to the ground, where the plants anchor-like fruits will nestle into the duff. (Thus the common name Slinkpod?) For other interesting information about this plant (e.g. ant and slug dispersal of seeds) and detailed references see the website: http://www.blm.gov/or/plans/surveyandmanage/SP/VascularPlants/scoliopusbigelovii.htm.camera Shot taken at f16, 8 sec (no flash) on a Canon D60 with a Canon 50mm Macro lens on a Gitzo 2220 tripod.
