location
About 200' southwest of ''George's Picnic Area'' along ''Buggy Trail'' in Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. (Santa Cruz County, California, US)family
Liliaceae
plant community Habitat: Cool moist duff under coast redwood, bigleaf maples.notes Habit shot showing three plants in full flower. The flowers have a peculiar odor which presumably attracts its pollinators and gives rise to one of the common names for the plant, Fetid Adder's Tongue. (Adder's Tongue referring to shape of the three long thin ascending petals?). Some people find the smell quite unpleasant, but it's not so bad to me...the best description I can give is that it smells like wet dog fur :-). As the plants grow, the mottled leaves will become larger and spread outward–eventually lying nearly flat against the ground. Also, the pedicels will lengthen considerably–drooping and twisting to the ground, where the anchor-like fruits will nestle into the duff. (Thus the common name Slinkpod?) For further interesting information about this plant (e.g. ant and slug dispersal of seeds) and detailed references see the website: http://www.blm.gov/or/plans/surveyandmanage/SP/VascularPlants/scoliopusbigelovii.htm.camera Shot at f8, 4 seconds (no flash) on a Canon D60 with a Canon 50mm Compact Macro lens mounted on a Gitzo 2220 tripod.
