  • date of photo  Apr 10, 2003
  • location   Serra Geral do Tocantins Ecological Station, Jalapão region, Cerrado of central Brazil (Brazil)
  • notes   The Jalapão region is a large tract of preserved Cerrado, encompassing areas in the Tocantins, Bahia, Piauí and Maranhão states. Preserving and studying this region is of prime importance due to the threats to the Cerrado environment. The Jalapão is located in the northeastern part of the Cerrado, close to its contact with the semi-arid Caatinga. The elevation seen in the center is called 'morro do fumo', and stands above a plateau of quatzitic sandy soils dominated by open savannas.
