INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 14, 2003
  • location   New York Canyon, a tributary of the North Fork American River (Placer County, California, US)
  • notes   At ~4600' elevation, on the verge of a cliff, this snake was photographed repeatedly as it wound its way through a system of tiny ledges and then disappeared into a hole in a mass of coarse dry moss. It was around two feet long. In this severely glaciated area of metamorphic rock, mainly chert of the Shoo Fly Complex, very little vegetation existed: stunted Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine, isolated tufts of Common Juniper, and some few Lewisia kelloggii.
