notes Slo.: oleander - syn.: 'Nerium kotschyi' auct. eur., Nerium indicum Mill., Nerium odorum Sol. ex Aitom. - Habitat: mountain ravine, west aspect; stony, skeletal ground; dry, open, sunny place, average precipitations ~ 700 mm/year, average annual temperature 24 deg C, elevations 220 m (700 feet), Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: stony soil. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Nerium oleander): Oleander is a beautiful Mediterranean shrub with pink flowers that has been known for many years through ancient texts and folklore. It is widely cultivated and there are probably more plants in cultivation than in natural habitats. Only two natural stands are known along the long coast and a thousand islands of the east Adriatic Sea shore, and these two are also somewhat questionable. Despite being strongly poisonous and even fatal in extreme cases, the shrub is a multifaceted medical plant that is used in traditional medicine such as Ayurvedic. Most of its plant parts, such as flowers, leaf juice, bark, and leaves, are used for the treatment of microbial and fungal diseases. - Ref.: (1) R.
