Murrill - Habitat: River bank, a few meters from the stream; in a narrow strip of light riparian forest, Salix eleagnos, Picea abies dominant trees; partly in shade; moist, calcareous ground; high air humidity; almost flat terrain; exposed to direct rain; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 6-8 deg C, elevation 535 m (1.750 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: a rotten stump of a toppled Salix eleagnos. - Comments (pertain to Flickr album Phellinopsis conchata: Phellinopsis conchata (recently separated from genus Phellinus) is not a common polypore, but, it is also not a very rare species. The taxon is interesting because it is the only (for now) known host of the smallest beetle recorded in Europe Baranowskiella ehnstromi, which was discovered only about 10 years ago. The beetle is truly small, with a length of the body of about 0.5 mm. It almost cannot be seen by naked eye. It is not completely sure that the beetle thrives exclusively on Phellinopsis conchata. It is possible that it will be found on some other Phellinus or Phellinopsis species or other polypore too. - Two fruit bodies present; pileate-effused-reflexed form; pileus width about 3.5 and 3 cm, resupinate part about 4 cm in vertical dimension; flesh tough, woody-corky; 10% KOH reaction on cap, flesh and pore layer strong, immediate, dark brown-blackish with reddish tint; smell indistinctive, on earth; pores surface about 5 pores/mm; SP faint, almost invisible, brown? - Spores sub globose, smooth, thick walled, brownish. Dimensions: (5) 5,2 - 5,8 (6,8) × (4,2) 4,4 - 5,1 (5,5) µm; Q = 1,1 - 1,25 (1,3); N = 34; Me = 5,5 × 4,7 µm; Qe = 1,2. Pleurocystidia numerous, dark brown; dimensions: 28 (SD = 8.4) x 8.8 (SD = 2.4) microns; Q = 3.2 (SD = 0.62), n = 14. Olympus CH20, NEA 100x/1.25, magnification 1.000 x, oil (spore); NEA 40x/0.65, magnification 400x (pleurocystidia, hypha), in water; fresh material.
