  • location   Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta; next to the trail from Trenta 2b cottage to Matvež's bridge, right bank of Skokar ravine. East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • family Common Script Lichen
  • notes   Habitat: Predominantly Fagus sylvatica forest; moderately inclined mountain slope; south aspect; calcareous, skeletal, colluvial ground; in shade; partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 558 m (1.380 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: bark of Fagus sylvatica. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Graphis scripta): Graphis scripta (agg.) is certainly one of the most common lichens in the Lower Trenta valley. Tens of them grow on almost every larger beech (Fagus sylvatica) in the forest. It is notoriously variable lichen. Consequently, the taxonomy of the genus Graphis is far from any agreement among lichenologists. Some claim a few species, other tens of them. Standard literature is mostly restrained. Ref. 1. states only two species for Baden-Württemberg, Ref. 3. and 5. state four and three species respectively for British Islands, and Ref. 2. four species for Upper Austria. The pitfall is that the species names used in these sources are much different. On the other extreme, Index Fungorum states over 1.000 names of described taxa in the genus. Only for Graphis scripta 'species' it states 200 different names. So, for an amateur it seems much better to keep it with Graphis scripta agg. then to enter into this nomenclature and taxonomic jungle reserved for experts. - Ref.: (1) V.
